A new scholarship fund honoring legendary DeKalb County High School football coach William "Buck" Godfrey will create new pathways to higher education at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, advancing both academic achievement and long-term community health.
Established by Coach Godfrey's family, the scholarship initiative aims to support promising high school graduates pursuing degrees at HBCUs. Godfrey, a revered figure in Georgia high school athletics, spent decades mentoring young men both on the field and in the classroom, emphasizing character development, educational attainment, and discipline.
Honoring a Legacy of Mentorship and Excellence
During his storied career at Southwest DeKalb High School, Coach Godfrey became one of the most successful high school football coaches in Georgia history. Beyond his record-winning tenure on the gridiron, Godfrey was widely recognized for his steadfast commitment to preparing young Black men for college and adulthood.
His family designed the new scholarship to ensure that his legacy of mentorship continues to impact future generations. By alleviating the financial burden of higher education, the fund allows students to attend HBCUs where they can thrive academically and personally.
Expanding Access to Education and Health Equity
Financial barriers remain one of the primary obstacles preventing Black students from completing postsecondary degrees. Scholarships targeted specifically for HBCU enrollment play a critical role in increasing graduation rates, reducing student debt, and expanding access to professional careers.
Beyond individual academic success, investing in HBCU students directly strengthens public health infrastructure in Black communities. HBCUs produce a disproportionate share of the nation’s Black doctors, nurses, public health professionals, and allied health workers. By helping students matriculate into these institutions, initiatives like the Buck Godfrey Scholarship help build a diverse health workforce capable of addressing systemic health disparities and improving outcomes in underserved areas.
Through this family-led scholarship, Coach Godfrey's profound impact on young lives will extend well beyond the athletic field, fostering a new generation of HBCU scholars and community leaders.
